Wheel Loaders

The loader – that is, the wheel loader – is the machine that picks up material, carries it and loads it onto trucks. Feeding aggregate at concrete batching plants, loading trucks in quarries, managing stockpiles in ports and yards, moving material in road building: in many jobs the loader sets the pace of the site. Types of loader

Standard wheel loader. Classified by bucket capacity; the basic machine for batching plants, quarries and general site work.

High-dump and long-boom models. Preferred where trucks with high bodies or feed hoppers have to be loaded.

Backhoe loader. A loader bucket at the front and a digging arm at the rear. In municipal, infrastructure and small earthmoving work it lets one machine do two jobs.

Selection criteria

• Bucket volume and material density: Sand, aggregate, coal or rock: the same bucket volume means a different load with a different material. The bucket must be chosen for the material.
• Matching the truck: The number of passes the loader needs to fill a truck directly affects daily output. Truck body and loader dump height should be assessed together.
• Tyres: A quarry needs cut-resistant tyres; sandy ground needs wide-base tyres. Choosing the right tyres with the machine lowers operating cost.
• Attachments: Pallet forks, a snow blade, a quick coupler: these keep the machine working at different times of the year.
• Local service: Access to parts and service in the country of operation should be decisive when choosing a brand.

Points to watch with Chinese brands

Chinese-built loaders stand out for their wide model range and short delivery options. It should be remembered that the same model can be built with different engine, emission and equipment packages for different markets. At the quotation stage we set out in writing details such as engine make, emission level, air conditioning, pre-filter and cooling package, so that you do not end up with a configuration unsuited to your site.
